Somatic Therapy in San Diego, CA
Your head knows you’re safe. Your body is still checking.
You’ve told yourself it’s fine. You’ve reasoned with yourself, and you know you’re safe. Your body didn’t get the message: the tight chest, the clenched jaw, the stomach that drops, shoulders that never quite come down. If you’re a teen, it might just feel like your body is doing things you can’t explain. If you’re a parent, it might be watching your kid shut down or melt down without knowing why.
What does “somatic” even mean? It comes from the Greek word soma, meaning body. Somatic therapy includes your body, not just your thoughts, because stress and anxiety don’t only live in your head.
Here are some reasons you could benefit from somatic therapy
- You’ve done the talking and the thinking, but your body still reacts
- You feel tension, tightness, or knots you can’t explain
- You overthink everything and feel stuck in your head
- You push through and ignore what your body is telling you
- Talk therapy has helped, but something still feels unfinished
Somatic Therapy in San Diego Can Help
You don’t have to keep overriding your body or arguing with it. Change is possible, and you don’t have to be “good at feelings” to start. Together we can learn what your body is trying to tell you and help it settle.
Benefits of Somatic Therapy
- Feeling calmer in your body, and recovering faster when you’re not
- Understanding your reactions instead of second-guessing them
- Getting out of your head when overthinking takes over
- Noticing your limits earlier, so saying no gets easier
- Old experiences holding less power
- Grounding tools you can use in real life
My Approach to Somatic Therapy
We start by getting curious about what you feel and where. You don’t need to be good at this, because noticing is the whole skill. Then we practice grounding and breathing tools together in session so you know what works for your body and can use it when it counts.
I hold a certificate in Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy from Embody Lab, and I sometimes pair this work with EMDR therapy when something deeper needs attention. With younger clients, I use play-based approaches, and parents are welcome to be part of the process. Sessions are virtual, in English or Spanish. If this sounds like a fit, I’d love to talk.
